Intro to Tech
PADI / TDI / IANTDAn introductory programme that familiarises recreational divers with technical equipment configurations and the mindset shift required for tech diving. No decompression diving, but you'll learn sidemount, backmount doubles, and basic equipment redundancy.
Sidemount Diver
PADI / TDISidemount configuration places cylinders alongside your body rather than on your back — improving hydrodynamics, access to cylinder valves, and comfort on long dives. Popular both as a recreational comfort upgrade and as a technical foundation course.
Tec 40 / 45 / 50

Where to Do Technical Training in Thailand
Technical diving instruction is available at specialist centres across Thailand. Koh Tao has the highest concentration of tech instructors, with several dedicated technical diving operations. Phuket is a popular base for Andaman tech diving, with access to deep wrecks and wall dives at Hin Daeng and Hin Muang. In the Gulf, Silent Divers on Koh Samui offer technical diving programmes including sidemount — one of the few Gulf operators with dedicated tech capability.
Prerequisites vary by programme but typically include Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver certification, plus a minimum logged dive count. Contact individual centres for current schedules and prerequisites.
Cave Diving in Thailand
Cave diving is a highly specialised technical discipline requiring dedicated certification before entering any overhead environment. Never attempt cave or cavern penetration without the appropriate training — it is one of the most hazardous diving environments in the world.
Thailand is not primarily known as a cave diving destination in the way that Mexico's cenotes or Florida's spring systems are, but there are a number of cavern and cave dive sites accessible to appropriately trained divers — as well as a small but dedicated network of cave diving instructors operating in the country.
Cavern vs Cave Diving
Cavern Diving
The entry-level overhead environment certification. Cavern divers remain within sight of natural light at all times, with a direct, unobstructed exit to open water. The PADI Cavern Diver (or TDI equivalent) course is the minimum qualification required.
Intro to Cave
The next progression, allowing limited penetration beyond the cavern zone using a continuous guideline, but without complex navigation. Requires Cavern Diver certification as a prerequisite.
Full Cave Diver
The complete cave diving certification, covering complex navigation, multiple guideline techniques, and management of the significant additional risks of deep overhead environments. A serious commitment requiring extensive prerequisites.
Cave Sites in Thailand
Tham Susa (Koh Tao)
A shallow cavern system accessible from the sea on Koh Tao's eastern coast. The cavern is diveable at cavern certification level — crystal clear water and interesting rock formations. No deep penetration.
Inland Cave Systems (Northern Thailand)
The cave systems of Chiang Rai province, including the Tham Luang cave complex made famous by the 2018 rescue operation, attract cave divers. These are freshwater systems requiring specific expedition planning and are not tourist dives.
Andaman Caverns
Several limestone formations along the Andaman coast contain partially submerged cavern systems, some explored by technical divers. Access and conditions vary significantly by site.
Training for Cave Diving in Thailand
A small number of Thai dive centres offer cavern and cave diver training, predominantly on Koh Tao and Phuket where the highest concentration of technical instructors operates. If cave diving is your goal, ensure any centre you approach has IANTD, TDI, or NSS-CDS certified cave instructors — not just recreational or standard technical credentials. The path to full cave diver certification is a minimum of several weeks of progressive training and cannot be rushed.
