Richelieu Rock. The name alone carries weight in the diving world. This horseshoe-shaped seamount near the Surin Islands, accessible only by liveaboard, is consistently ranked among the very best dive sites on the planet — and once you’ve dived it, you understand why completely.
A Riot of Life
What makes Richelieu Rock extraordinary is not any single feature but the sheer density and variety of life across every square metre of rock. Every surface is encrusted with soft corals in vivid purples, oranges, and reds. Nudibranchs and flatworms of extraordinary variety crawl across the corals. Ghost pipefish — transparent, impossibly delicate — drift in pairs near the pinnacle tips. Seahorses wrap their tails around coral stalks. Harlequin shrimp patrol their territory. Frogfish in multiple colours wait in patient ambush.
And above this extraordinary macro tableau, the pelagic world: massive barracuda schools, clouds of trevally, and — the prize — whale sharks, which appear at Richelieu Rock more reliably than almost anywhere else in Thailand.
The Whale Sharks
From February through May, whale sharks cruise through Richelieu Rock on an almost daily basis. The nutrient-rich waters around the seamount attract concentrations of plankton that these giants follow on their migrations. Multiple whale shark sightings in a single week are the norm, not the exception, for liveaboard trips hitting the site during peak season.
How to Dive It
Richelieu Rock is only accessible by liveaboard — typically as part of a 4–7 night Similan Islands itinerary from Khao Lak or Phuket. Day trips theoretically exist but are very long and very rough. The site is best dived multiple times — morning, afternoon, night — as the cast of characters changes completely between each dive.
Jacques Cousteau himself declared Richelieu Rock one of the finest dive sites he had ever visited. Half a century later, the consensus hasn’t changed.
